Elka Flooring
Elka engineered flooring is a truly practical product, chosen for its strength, flexibility of installation and overall stability. It perfectly mimics a solid wood floor, but is actually made of three or more layers of real wood with an upper layer of genuine hardwood. It can be used in conservatories and in conjunction with underfloor heating.
Installation
With a 20 mm thickness, Elka Copper Oak Smoked Hand Sawn Engineered Flooring, Oiled, 189x4x20 Mm gives excellent rigidity and stability, and can even be laid as a suspended floor directly over battens or timber joists (typically at no more than 400 mm centres; always check the manufacturer's guidance). It can be secret-nailed, glued down or floated over underlay, and this thickness often comes with an extended guarantee.
Over underfloor heating (UFH) a glue-down installation is highly recommended, using a flexible wood flooring adhesive from our adhesives & damp-proofers range.
A thicker board usually also means a deeper wear layer above the tongue, so the floor can be sanded and refinished more times over its life. Explore our 20 mm flooring collection.
4 mm Hardwood Wear Layer
Elka Copper Oak Smoked Hand Sawn Engineered Flooring, Oiled, 189x4x20 Mm has a 4 mm real hardwood top layer, a generous wear layer for engineered wood flooring. The top layer, or wear layer, is the solid wood surface you walk on. Its thickness decides how many times the floor can be sanded and refinished during its life.
A professional sanding usually removes around 0.5–1 mm of timber, so a 4 mm wear layer can typically be renovated 2–3 times. Between sandings, the finish can also be refreshed with a recoat of lacquer or maintenance oil, without sanding back to bare wood.
It offers a great balance of value and longevity, ideal for living rooms, bedrooms and family homes where the floor is expected to last for many years. Compare other 4 mm top layer floors, or browse our full engineered wood flooring range.
Oak Flooring
Oak is an extremely versatile wood type - a medium density hardwood, with strength, character and durability surpasses many other timber species. Oak starts soft and malleable, but once dry becomes hard and durable. Whether aged by the weather or preserved with a suitable stain or varnish, the beauty of Oak is undeniable. Its distinctive look exudes quality, and its rich colouring and attractive woodgrain deliver an elegant texture. Its rustic look is able to add instant charm and character to any application, whether situated internally or externally.
Rustic Character
Elka Copper Oak Smoked Hand Sawn Engineered Flooring, Oiled, 189x4x20 Mm is available in Rustic grade, a timber selection that allows knots of any size and natural colour variation between planks. Knots and small cracks are usually filled during manufacture, leaving a smooth, practical surface with plenty of character.
Rustic grade flooring adds warmth and authenticity to any space and suits country, industrial and Scandinavian styles alike. Its lively, varied surface also helps disguise everyday wear, dust and light scratches, which makes it a great choice for busy family homes, hallways and kitchens.
Because more of each log can be used, Rustic grade is often the best-value option in a collection. Grade describes appearance, not durability. Browse all Rustic grade flooring, or compare with the more even Natural grade.
Natural Oiled Finish
An oiled finish soaks into the wood and protects it from within, giving the timber a natural, matt look and feel that brings out the warmth and grain of the wood. Floors are often brushed before oiling to emphasise the texture, a finish known as "Brushed & Oiled". Factory-applied UV oils and hardwax oils add extra resistance from day one.
Oil is less hard-wearing than lacquer, but it can be topped up and spot-repaired without sanding the whole floor. Regular maintenance with a compatible oil or hardwax oil can delay a full renovation and preserve the wear layer of your floor.
Traditional oils can take 6–10 hours to dry per coat, so plan re-oiling around a quiet period at home. Putting it off too long can mean an earlier full sanding. Browse all oiled wood flooring.
Maintenance of Oiled Floors
Oiled floors bring a warm, natural feel to any room, but they need a little more regular care than lacquered floors. Sweep or vacuum regularly, then clean with a soap-based cleaner made for oiled floors, which nourishes the wood as it cleans. We recommend the Bona Spray Mop for Oiled Floors, available in our cleaning & maintenance range.
Depending on foot traffic, top up the finish with a maintenance oil typically every 1–2 years, and more often in busy areas such as hallways and kitchens. Regular re-oiling keeps the wood protected and can put off a full sanding, which preserves the wear layer of your floor.
A big advantage of an oiled finish is that light scratches and worn patches can be spot-repaired without treating the whole floor. Find compatible products in our oil & hardwax-oil range.
