Hardwood Wear Layer

Holt Rockingham Engineered Oak Flooring, 180x3x14 Mm, Matt Lacquered has a 3 mm real hardwood top layer, the most popular and cost-effective wear layer for engineered wood flooring. The top layer, or wear layer, is the solid wood surface you walk on. Its thickness decides how many times the floor can be sanded and refinished during its life.

A professional sanding usually removes around 0.5–1 mm of timber, so a 3 mm wear layer can typically be renovated at least once, and often twice. Between sandings, the finish can also be refreshed with a recoat of lacquer or maintenance oil, without sanding back to bare wood.

Oak Flooring

Rustic Character

Holt Rockingham Engineered Oak Flooring, 180x3x14 Mm, Matt Lacquered is available in Rustic grade, a timber selection that allows knots of any size and natural colour variation between planks. Knots and small cracks are usually filled during manufacture, leaving a smooth, practical surface with plenty of character.

Rustic grade flooring adds warmth and authenticity to any space and suits country, industrial and Scandinavian styles alike. Its lively, varied surface also helps disguise everyday wear, dust and light scratches, which makes it a great choice for busy family homes, hallways and kitchens.

Installation

Our 14 mm engineered wood flooring range is the most popular, thanks to its value and wide choice of colours and finishes. With its click-lock joint system, Holt Rockingham Engineered Oak Flooring, 180x3x14 Mm, Matt Lacquered is quick to fit as a floating floor over concrete or timber subfloors with no glue needed, which makes it one of the safest choices over underfloor heating (UFH).

Click planks lock together to form one rigid surface. If they are floated over an uneven subfloor, they can flex, bounce or squeak after installation. Check that the subfloor is level, typically within 2–3 mm over 2 m, and fix any problem areas before you start. Lay the floor over a suitable underlay for better sound insulation and comfort.

Acclimatise the packs for at least 48 hours and leave a 10–15 mm expansion gap around the room. Browse more click system engineered flooring.

Maintenance

Lacquered wood floors are easy to look after. Vacuum with a hard-floor head or sweep regularly to remove grit, which can scratch the surface. Every so often, clean with a pH-neutral, lacquer-friendly cleaner that leaves no moisture or residue. For everyday cleaning we recommend the Bona Spray Mop with Bona Cleaner refills, available in our cleaning & maintenance range.

Avoid steam cleaners, wet mops, wax or oil-based polishes, which can damage the finish or make it slippery. Wipe up spills promptly, fit felt pads under furniture and use doormats at entrances to keep the floor looking new for longer.

When a busy area starts to look dull or worn, and the lacquer hasn't worn through to bare wood, it can be lightly abraded and given a fresh coat of floor lacquer without a full sanding.
