Oak Flooring

Oak is an extremely versatile wood type - a medium density hardwood, with strength, character and durability surpasses many other timber species. Oak starts soft and malleable, but once dry becomes hard and durable. Whether aged by the weather or preserved with a suitable stain or varnish, the beauty of Oak is undeniable. Its distinctive look exudes quality, and its rich colouring and attractive woodgrain deliver an elegant texture. Its rustic look is able to add instant charm and character to any application, whether situated internally or externally.

Natural Oiled Finish

An oiled finish soaks into the wood and protects it from within, giving the timber a natural, matt look and feel that brings out the warmth and grain of the wood. Floors are often brushed before oiling to emphasise the texture, a finish known as "Brushed & Oiled". Factory-applied UV oils and hardwax oils add extra resistance from day one.

Oil is less hard-wearing than lacquer, but it can be topped up and spot-repaired without sanding the whole floor. Regular maintenance with a compatible oil or hardwax oil can delay a full renovation and preserve the wear layer of your floor.

Traditional oils can take 6–10 hours to dry per coat, so plan re-oiling around a quiet period at home. Putting it off too long can mean an earlier full sanding. Browse all oiled wood flooring.

Brushed Surface

A brushed finish gives a wood floor a deeper, tactile texture you can both see and feel. During manufacture, before the oil or lacquer is applied, each plank is worked with rotating wire brushes. These remove some of the softer wood between the growth rings and leave the harder grain slightly raised, so the natural pattern of the timber stands out.

The effect is most striking on open-grained species such as oak. The textured surface also adds a little grip underfoot and helps disguise light scratches, scuffs and dust, which makes brushed floors a practical choice for hallways, kitchens and homes with children or pets.

Brushing works with both finishes: oiled floors gain a natural, matt character, while lacquered floors keep their texture with easy-care protection.

Designed for Chevron

This product is designed to be laid in a chevron pattern only. Unlike herringbone, where rectangular blocks overlap, chevron blocks have angled ends that meet in a precise point, forming a continuous, crisp V-shaped zig-zag across the floor.

The clean, flowing lines of chevron parquet give a room a sense of direction, movement and modern sophistication. It is a popular choice for hallways, living rooms and open-plan spaces, and laying the arrows towards a focal point such as a window or fireplace draws the eye through the room.

Rustic Character

Timbercraft Chevron Engineered Oak Flooring, Brushed & Oiled, 90x510x15 mm is available in Rustic grade, a timber selection that allows knots of any size and natural colour variation between planks. Knots and small cracks are usually filled during manufacture, leaving a smooth, practical surface with plenty of character.

Rustic grade flooring adds warmth and authenticity to any space and suits country, industrial and Scandinavian styles alike. Its lively, varied surface also helps disguise everyday wear, dust and light scratches, which makes it a great choice for busy family homes, hallways and kitchens.

Installation

Tongue-and-groove parquet blocks must be fully glued down to a solid, flat and smooth subfloor, using an adhesive suitable for wood blocks. Suitable bases include plywood, chipboard, concrete and cement boards, sand-cement screeds and levelling compounds. Choose a strong-grab adhesive from our adhesives & damp-proofers range.

Non-timber subfloors such as concrete or screed may need a liquid damp-proof membrane (DPM) first, and should generally be below 75% relative humidity before the blocks are laid. The subfloor must also be flat, typically within 2–3 mm over 2 m, because small blocks follow every dip and hump.

Set out the layout from a centre line so the pattern stays square to the room, and leave a 10–15 mm expansion gap at the perimeter. Browse our full range of parquet flooring.
