Oak Flooring
Oak is an extremely versatile wood type - a medium density hardwood, with strength, character and durability surpasses many other timber species. Oak starts soft and malleable, but once dry becomes hard and durable. Whether aged by the weather or preserved with a suitable stain or varnish, the beauty of Oak is undeniable. Its distinctive look exudes quality, and its rich colouring and attractive woodgrain deliver an elegant texture. Its rustic look is able to add instant charm and character to any application, whether situated internally or externally.
Durable Lacquered Finish
A lacquered finish seals the wood beneath a clear, hard-wearing layer, making it one of the most practical choices for a real wood floor. Spills, dirt and moisture stay on the surface instead of soaking into the timber, so they can simply be wiped away before they leave a mark, and the floor stands up well to everyday foot traffic.
Lacquered floors are also among the easiest to look after. There is no regular re-oiling to plan for: sweeping or vacuuming, with an occasional damp mop using a cleaner made for lacquered floors, keeps them looking their best. The smooth, sealed surface doesn't hold on to dust either, making it ideal for kitchens, hallways, busy family homes and allergy sufferers.
Factory-applied lacquers are built up in several coats and cured for extra hardness, giving long-lasting protection in everyday use. Modern water-based lacquers are non-yellowing, so the floor keeps an even colour and sheen for years, with finishes from natural-looking extra matt to classic gloss to suit any interior. It is a finish that keeps your floor looking beautiful while adding lasting value to your home.
Brushed Surface
A brushed finish gives a wood floor a deeper, tactile texture you can both see and feel. During manufacture, before the oil or lacquer is applied, each plank is worked with rotating wire brushes. These remove some of the softer wood between the growth rings and leave the harder grain slightly raised, so the natural pattern of the timber stands out.
The effect is most striking on open-grained species such as oak. The textured surface also adds a little grip underfoot and helps disguise light scratches, scuffs and dust, which makes brushed floors a practical choice for hallways, kitchens and homes with children or pets.
Brushing works with both finishes: oiled floors gain a natural, matt character, while lacquered floors keep their texture with easy-care protection.
Designed for Herringbone
This product is designed to be laid in a herringbone pattern, where rectangular blocks meet at right angles to form a classic zig-zag. It can also be laid in variations such as double herringbone and basket weave, and some symmetrical sizes allow the blocks to be fitted in square or diamond patterns too.
A timeless parquet design, herringbone adds movement and elegance to any room, from Victorian and Georgian period properties to modern open-plan spaces. Laying the pattern along the longest wall makes a room feel larger. Tongue-and-groove herringbone blocks are usually supplied as left and right (A/B) blocks.
Herringbone blocks should be glued down to a flat subfloor with a suitable wood flooring adhesive. Compare all herringbone parquet flooring in our range.
Rustic Character
Timbercraft Herringbone Engineered Oak Parquet Flooring, Walnut Stained, Matt Lacquered, 80x300x18 Mm is available in Rustic grade, a timber selection that allows knots of any size and natural colour variation between planks. Knots and small cracks are usually filled during manufacture, leaving a smooth, practical surface with plenty of character.
Rustic grade flooring adds warmth and authenticity to any space and suits country, industrial and Scandinavian styles alike. Its lively, varied surface also helps disguise everyday wear, dust and light scratches, which makes it a great choice for busy family homes, hallways and kitchens.
Because more of each log can be used, Rustic grade is often the best-value option in a collection. Grade describes appearance, not durability. Browse all Rustic grade flooring, or compare with the more even Natural grade.
Installation
Tongue-and-groove parquet blocks must be fully glued down to a solid, flat and smooth subfloor, using an adhesive suitable for wood blocks. Suitable bases include plywood, chipboard, concrete and cement boards, sand-cement screeds and levelling compounds. Choose a strong-grab adhesive from our adhesives & damp-proofers range.
Non-timber subfloors such as concrete or screed may need a liquid damp-proof membrane (DPM) first, and should generally be below 75% relative humidity before the blocks are laid. The subfloor must also be flat, typically within 2–3 mm over 2 m, because small blocks follow every dip and hump.
Set out the layout from a centre line so the pattern stays square to the room, and leave a 10–15 mm expansion gap at the perimeter. Browse our full range of parquet flooring.
